UTM-NJU Solidify Partnership: A Landmark Moment in Malaysia-China Collaboration

Nanjing, Dec 14 – UTM Joins Forces with Nanjing University: A New Era of Collaboration

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is making significant strides in the global research community following a recent visit to Nanjing University (NJU) from December 8 to 14, 2024. This visit comes at a pivotal time, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Malaysia and China. It represents a vital opportunity to enhance cultural, academic, research, and strategic ties between these two nations.

Establishment of the NJU Test and Training Centre

A landmark outcome of the UTM delegation’s visit is the acceptance of NJU’s proposal to establish an NJU Test and Training Centre on the UTM campus. This centre aims to serve as a hub for academic certifications, comprehensive assessments, and collaborative research initiatives. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hadina Habil, Chair of the Language Academy at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, “This isn’t just a step forward; it’s a giant leap for UTM. This Test Centre will enhance our capabilities and position UTM as a hub for global academic excellence.”

This significant collaboration is poised to not only strengthen UTM’s educational offerings but also bolster its reputation in the international academic landscape.

Joint Research Initiatives: Focusing on AI and Advanced Materials

Another remarkable development from the visit is the decision to embark on joint research initiatives under the Malaysia-China Science, Technology, and Innovation Grant. This grant, overseen by the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), will target advanced research in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced materials. By addressing pressing global challenges, this partnership seeks to drive sustainable innovation and contribute to significant scientific advancements.

The groundwork for this collaborative research was laid during a strategic exchange on July 28, 2024. NJU’s Director of International Relations met with UTM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic & International, Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, to explore potential avenues for collaboration. This dialogue was instrumental in establishing the foundation for future partnerships, culminating in the joint research initiatives.

Insights from Nanjing University’s Research Culture

The UTM delegation, consisting of ten members and led by Prof. Dr. Mohd Shahrizal Sunar, Director of the Institute of Human Centered Engineering (iHumEn), gained invaluable insights into NJU’s renowned research culture. Ranking 145th in the QS World University Rankings 2025, NJU is celebrated for its commitment to innovation, facilitated by a supportive ecosystem and state-of-the-art facilities. The delegation’s exposure to this high-caliber research environment highlighted the significance of institutional backing and superior infrastructure in fostering academic success.

The Role of Bowen Academy

The success of this visit was greatly attributed to the Bowen Academy, which serves as the Smart Partner of UTM’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). The academy not only hosted the UTM delegation but also provided pivotal support in facilitating discussions and insights into NJU’s academic culture. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shahrizal Sunar emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This collaboration has demonstrated what is possible when two world-class institutions partner. Bowen Academy’s role was vital in ensuring our visit transcended formality, becoming a stepping stone for innovation.”

Cultural Immersion and Engagement

The visit was not solely a technical endeavor; it also offered cultural immersion into the historic cities of Nanjing and Suzhou. Delegates engaged in meaningful interactions that fostered deeper cultural understanding, enriching the overall experience.

Key highlights of the cultural aspect of the visit included:

  • Engaging with Leading Faculties: Delegates participated in thorough discussions with faculty members from various top schools, such as Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Intelligence Science and Technology, International Studies, and Medicine, paving the way for future collaborative projects.

  • Exploring Advanced Facilities: Visits to NJU’s campuses showcased the university’s commitment to excellence through its advanced research infrastructure.

  • Cultural Enrichment: The group immersed themselves in the vibrant heritage of Nanjing and Suzhou, further strengthening ties through shared cultural appreciation.

Conclusion and Future Aspirations

The visit concluded with a farewell dinner hosted by NJU’s International Affairs Office, during which both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to long-term collaboration. The establishment of the NJU Test Centre and the insights garnered from NJU’s outstanding research culture signal a promising future for UTM. This collaboration marks a bold stride for UTM, underscoring its dedication to fostering international partnerships and bridging academic borders.

As UTM progresses, this significant relationship with Nanjing University is poised to enhance its contributions to the global academic community and push the boundaries of research and innovation in Malaysia and beyond.
