FAO Director-General QU Dongyu’s Visit to China: Strengthening Agrifood Systems and Promoting Sustainable Development

The recent visit of QU Dongyu, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, to China underscores the vital role that collaboration plays in transforming agrifood systems across the globe. From January 2 to January 7, 2024, QU explored innovative agricultural practices, engaged with key research institutions, and forged valuable partnerships aimed at supporting the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life. His discussions highlighted a commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of agricultural advancement.

Exploring Innovative Agricultural Practices in Guangdong Province

QU’s journey commenced in Guangdong Province, near Guangzhou, where he visited XAG, a pioneering smart agriculture technology company. XAG employs robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize farming techniques, addressing pressing issues such as rural depopulation, climate change, and water scarcity. These innovations are critical as farmers strive to maximize productivity while minimizing resource use.

Additionally, QU visited the Haid Group, a significant player in the agricultural sector, boasting over 40,000 employees across more than 600 subsidiaries. The group’s operations encompass a broad spectrum, including feed production, animal healthcare, intelligent farming, and food processing, showcasing the comprehensive approach needed to meet the growing demands for sustainable food systems.

Engaging with Academia: A Collaborative Future

The Director-General’s visit also took him to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s Guangzhou campus, where he toured the Brain & Metaverse Joint Innovation Lab. Engaging with Professor Ni Mingxuan, President of the University, QU emphasized the importance of academic partnerships in addressing global challenges, including sustainable development and climate change. He reiterated FAO’s commitment to education as a strategic investment in a better future, thereby promoting lifelong learning and knowledge sharing.

One of the pivotal stops was the Agricultural Genomics Institute (AGIS) in Shenzhen. At AGIS, research focused on agricultural genomics and molecular breeding, which are essential for developing high-yield crop varieties. QU reinforced that scientific research should align with production goals to deliver practical solutions for enhancing agricultural quality and efficiency.

Strengthening Tropical Agriculture in Hainan Province

Continuing his journey, QU arrived in Hainan Province, where he visited the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS). Throughout the visit, he reiterated the importance of FAO’s ongoing partnership with CATAS to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in tropical regions. The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations set for 2026, promises to amplify collaborative efforts in tackling agricultural challenges.

While at CATAS, the Director-General witnessed groundbreaking presentations by researchers focused on breeding tropical crop varieties and improving pest control methods. This knowledge is indispensable, particularly for smallholder farmers who depend on sustainable practices to flourish in tropical climates.

Additionally, QU explored the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, where he paid homage to Academician Yuan Longping, known as the Father of Hybrid Rice. He encouraged researchers to continue pushing the boundaries of agricultural science to bolster global food security, reinforcing the need to honor foundational research while embracing new innovations.

Advancing Agricultural Research in Chongqing

In Chongqing, QU visited key facilities including the Chongqing Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center, where he learned about initiatives aimed at enhancing animal husbandry through veterinary support and disease surveillance. His visit to a smart seedling factory and engagement with modern agricultural practices reflected FAO’s mission to promote technological advancements in farming.

High-Level Discussions on Agricultural Cooperation

QU’s itinerary included high-level meetings with officials from Guangdong and Hainan Provinces, where vital discussions centered on leveraging local agricultural expertise. The meetings with provincial leaders emphasized the sharing of successful agricultural practices with FAO members worldwide, suggesting that Guangdong could serve as a model for other regions facing similar climatic and agricultural challenges.

Furthermore, during a meeting with H.E. Han Jun, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in China, QU received updates on China’s agricultural development, particularly concerning smallholder farmers and globalization’s impact on farming operational practices. This dialogue highlighted the importance of international cooperation in key areas such as food safety and agricultural capacity building.
