Notably, four Chinese companies ranked among the world’s top ten for patents in green and low-carbon technologies in 2024. This list includes three state-owned giants—State Grid, China Huaneng Group, and China Southern Power Grid—alongside the private firm Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited. These organizations are at the forefront of China’s movement toward sustainable energy, leveraging both capital and talent to drive innovations.

International Collaboration Through the PCT

In addition to domestic accomplishments, China has also made significant strides on the international stage. In 2024, the country recorded 6,356 applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for green and low-carbon technologies, marking a remarkable increase of 130% from 2020. This achievement reaffirms China’s position at the top of the global ranking for green technology patents for four consecutive years. Such international applications indicate a desire for collaboration and knowledge sharing, emphasizing China’s commitment to aiding global sustainability efforts.

Moreover, China’s enterprises have made substantial contributions to international green initiatives. They have collectively provided 12,000 green technology solutions to WIPO GREEN, a platform designed to connect innovators and sustainable technology providers.
